About me and this Blog

Hello Everyone!  I thought I would create a page sharing a little about who I am.  I am a mother to three wonderful little ones.  My oldest is 2 and 1/2 and my youngest is 2 months old.  I am someone who definitely has my hands full, but loving every minute of it.  Prior to motherhood, I worked as a case manager in a couple of non-for-profits and am now getting my MSW at Jane Addams College of Social Work.  My main reason for starting this blog is to be a resource for other moms out there.  I do not have all the answers, but I figured the things I have learned can help other moms just as the many blogs I have looked at have helped me.  I might even feature some of those blogs as I write!

In addition, my family and I have decided to be more conscience about the food we eat and create healthier eating habits.   As I researched healthier ways of eating, information about the GAPS diet fell into my lap through what I can only see as a blessing from God.  My husband bought a kids piano from a lady who was doing the GAPS diet.  Her family was dealing with some of the same things we were and she told my husband how much it had helped her family.   As my husband and I read the information we agreed it would be a good choice for us.  We began the Full GAPS diet in March 2012, I threw out everything that was processed or had corn syrup in it and I am learning how to cook everything from scratch!  As I am learning how to do the GAPS Diet, the one thing I have noticed is that eating healthy, eating organic and eating "GAPS" is very expensive.  This brought out the social worker in me and I thought to myself, "Someone who is on food stamps or a limited budget would have a very difficult time doing this diet, let alone eating fresh food."  Thus began my quest...to learn how to make GAPS affordable to those in poverty.  The average family of 5 who is receiving food stamps receives between $468 to $768 a month.  Now, one might think this is a lot; however, a family of 5 could easily spend $800 to $1000 a month eating everything fresh, farm raised and organic. (One could also buy 1/4 or 1/2 a cow at time to bring the monthly bill down; however, one has to pay between $600 to $1200 at once for the beef and have a big enough freezer to house it during the year.)   For the purpose of this blog, I plan to spend approximately $568 a month (somewhere in between $468 and $768) on groceries for my family buying everything fresh, farm raised and mostly organic (It is almost impossible to buy everything organic on a limited budget, but I will try my best).  My hope is that through this blog, I will be able to help mamas and papas out there, who are on food stamps, provide good quality food for their families.

***FYI: Since I am living in the city of Chicago, most of my posts regarding the GAPS Diet will reflect this area as far as the locations I shop and the cost of food.
